A cutter can also protect a pitcher’s fastball. If hitters lean toward the heater, the cutter changes the contact point. If hitters expect the cutter, the fastball may stay straighter and beat them to a different spot.

A tunneling plan can look brilliant on paper and fail on the mound if the pitcher cannot command both pitches. The shared path has to begin somewhere believable. The finishing locations have to match the count, hitter, and risk level.

A chase pitch must first look like a pitch the hitter might need to swing at. A strike pitch must be close enough to the intended lane that it does not drift into damage territory. Command is what gives deception boundaries.
